Janey Roanna is an interdisciplinary Graphic Designer and Photographer whose work focuses on communication & (cultural) Diversity.
She's a Caribbean/Dutch woman raised in the suburbs of Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
Her artistic practice, which spans analog pictures, digital designs, collages, grafitti and more explores the interplay between analog and digital mediums. Drawing inspiration from the African Diaspora & personal experiences, Janey addresses societal issues through a personal lens.
At 23, she has already made significant strides in her field, having graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy (WdKA) in the Netherlands with a Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design. Before completing her studies, Janey was actively working as a freelance creative, amassing a diverse portfolio of projects.
Her projects often illustrate that designing to her goes far beyond a job, it’s rather a way of living / processing life's complexities. Her creative endeavors embody a dedication to interacting with and learning from diverse communities, emphasizing empathy, collaboration, and critical engagement.
Her most recent project took her to New York, where she collaborated extensively with mixed media artist Luna Laila. As a photographer and videographer, Janey captured dynamic content throughout New York City, including a collaboration with Club Pianos in East Village - Brooklyn.
She regularly works as a youth mentor with organization Nul Teen Art, where she guides young people aged 12-18 through various projects. Her favourite being a yearly graffiti workshop in collaboration with ALL CAPS, where she gives grafifiti advice, sets up exhibitions, and most importantly builds special connections with the next generation.
In addition to her freelance work, Janey completed an internship at Burobraak in Amsterdam and collaborated with organizations like BIJ1 and Atria, the institute for women's history and emancipation. For Atria, she designed an educational package for secondary schools, featuring significant women in history.
Among her favourite projects are her youth mentorship with Nul Teen Art and the educational project for Atria, where her passions for emancipation, education, and supporting today's youth converge.
